- Jeffrey D. Pinner
Our vision is to build a future in which every member of our community can experience quality of life at the end of life. Replacing our hospice care center on Lake Erie in Cleveland is the next step toward making this vision a reality.
Our Quality of Life capital campaign will help fund a new, state-of-the-art Hospice Care & Community Center on our existing lakeside property. This will allow us to deliver the highest level of end-of-life care in the highest quality care environment to ensure every patient and their family has access to the support and services they need in a welcoming and comfortable environment.

“An updated care center that better integrates technology would allow us to better care for the patient and their loved ones. Plus, it’s what this community deserves.” - Kathryn Ilersich, Registered Nurse | “A single-floor layout with more storage and equipment space would mean we can get food to patients quicker and better meet their needs. Because in a patient’s final moments, every moment counts.” - Shelly Walker, Dietary Team Leader |
Building on Our Legacy of Compassionate Care
Throughout our 45-year history, we have served over 150,000 patients and their loved ones, expanded our reach in response to our community’s needs, and continually enhanced our programs and facilities. We are a leader in end-of-life care, offering comprehensive hospice and palliative care, caregiver support, and bereavement services across 18 counties in Northern Ohio. We remain committed to caring for our patients and their loved ones wherever they need us during their end-of-life journey.
We Need You! Your campaign support will help us build a more welcoming, efficient, and innovative Hospice Care & Community Center. This new space will allow us to continue to deliver hospice care, palliative care, bereavement services, and more in a state-of-the-art environment that rises to the level of care that our clinicians deliver every day. It will also enable us to better adapt to the ever-changing healthcare landscape through a more flexible space and deepen our engagement with the community through a dedicated Community Center. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to achieving our vision. We invite you to be part of this historic moment. Our goal is to raise at least $18 million in philanthropic donations in this campaign to help rebuild Hospice of the Western Reserve’s hospice care center in Cleveland. The new Hospice Care & Community Center will eventually replace the care delivered in the existing David Simpson Hospice House. It will be built in the North Collinwood neighborhood on land Hospice of the Western Reserve owns, adjacent to the existing care center on E. 185th Street.
There are times when a patient requires more medical support, around-the-clock monitoring, or their caregiver needs respite. A hospice care center meets these needs by offering a range of medical, emotional, spiritual and social services in a welcoming, comfortable and homelike environment. Here, patients and families are welcome to stay, gather and celebrate life as they would at home – from cooking meals in a family kitchen to gathering around a fireplace. Our community relies on hospice care centers in addition to receiving end-of-life care in their home, nursing home, or wherever else they prefer or require care.
Given hospice is designed to relieve suffering for family members and caregivers in addition to patients, it is critical that Hospice of the Western Reserve continues its bereavement activities in the new facility. As such, we are building a Community Center, a dedicated space within the new facility to house our healing classes, support groups, counseling sessions, and more to help families cope with and process the death of their loved one.
This space will also serve as a hub for community outreach, providing education about end-of-life care options and the role hospice can play in promoting quality of life at the end of life. We will also use the large community space to host memorials, all-staff gatherings, community events, and other convenings for organizations across our local community.
Hospice of the Western Reserve’s groundbreaking ceremony is on September 18, 2024. After breaking ground, the construction timeline is estimated to be about two years. It is our hope to open the new care center in 2026.
When the David Simpson Hospice House opened in 1995, it was state of the art. Located on Lake Erie at East 185th Street, the “House on the Lake” was the first of its kind in Ohio and one of only a few inpatient hospice care centers in the United States. Over the past nearly 30 years, the David Simpson Hospice House has cared for more than 1,100 patients each year and supported countless loved ones.
But the needs of our community have shifted since it was built. Today, our community faces an increased need for complex care, and our staff and volunteers deserve a more efficient, state-of-the-art facility that better supports their commitment to meeting these challenges. Additionally, there are upcoming maintenance needs at this facility that would be disruptive to our patients and costly to address. Given our reputation for excellence, we have a responsibility to upgrade our care center and invest in the future, ensuring we continue to meet the changing needs of our community for generations to come.
Hospice of the Western Reserve has partnered with award-winning architecture firm E4H to build the new care center, which is estimated to cost about $25 million. We will supplement philanthropy with additional revenue sources, including public funding.
Hospice of the Western Reserve is exploring various options for the future-state of the David Simpson Hospice House and campus at large after the transition to the new facility.
