Ask Dr. Bob: Substance Abuse Problems

Default blog teaser image

My wife died five years ago. This was the most painful experience I have ever had in my life. The depth of the pain and the duration of the pain made daily functioning unbearable. To handle the pain, I started to have a drink in the evening. This seemed to help. Soon it was two drinks, then, in a very short period of time it was a fifth-plus a day. What started out to be helpful ended up being harmful. All I wanted to do was numb the pain! I now have been clean for six months and I am ready to deal with the death of my wife in a positive way. -- Clean for Six Months

After discussing options with development staff, George decided that creating a memorial garden was the ideal way to honor his wife while bringing solace and pleasure to others.

Grief: Celebrating Your Birthday After the Death of a Parent

I miss seeing “love, mom” on a birthday card.  My day feels empty.

I have spoken to a number of individuals who have remarked how difficult their birthday has become after the death of their mother or father. Every year on my birthday, I wait for the phone to ring for my aging parents to sing to me. I will miss their out of tune voices when I no longer get that call.

Survival Tips for Coping with the Holidays

During the winter months, the short days and gray skies may be disheartening. Cloudy days frequently outnumber sunny days in our Cleveland winter. This lack of sunshine and light can add a depressive element to your grief. Turn on the lights! Talk to a friend or counselor. Remember that the seasons change and spring will come.
