The Blue Streak Ensemble, a group of vibrant, young musicians that include members of the Cleveland Orchestra, will perform at the David Simpson Hospice House Aug. 8 at 2 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Moments to Remember: Monsters Win it for Phil


For someone who never wore a beard in his life, Phil Simon decided to grow a beard during his last weeks of living. In the world of hockey, bearded athletes mean they earned the status of playing in the finals. 

For Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters, the lucky playoff beards inspired just the right kind of synergy needed to win this year's Calder Cup. The inspiration came from Phil Simon, the equipment manager for the Lake Erie Monsters who in his last weeks of life joined the team in sporting a playoff beard.

Lubrizol Notches a Decade of 'Taking on the Hard Jobs'


The Lubrizol Building Bonds team takes on “the hard jobs no one else wants to do.” And they’ve been taking them on for 10 years.

The team, a group of men and women from the Wickliffe organization’s community engagement team, arrives each summer, wearing matching “Building Bonds” T-shirts and get right to work at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland.

Rocky River Community Chorus Fills Ames with Happy Sounds


The sound of music filled the Ames Family Hospice House on June 1, fueled by almost 60 members of the Rocky River Community Chorus.

Under the direction of Emily Ortolano, the chorus, now in its 37th year, entertained staff, patients and their loved ones with an array of songs spanning from Broadway tunes to patriotic and contemporary songs.

Battling Lung Cancer, Pitcher Takes the Mound for the Love of the Game


Dennis Henderson stood on the pitcher's mound, wound up and let the ball fly toward the catcher. The moment, pitching at a professional baseball game, was long in coming, and one the 54-year-old Conneaut, Ohio resident would cherish.
